What Causes My Computer to Freeze or Lock-up?
                                                                                                                                                                                  By Frank White

I'll start by saying nobody really knows why your computer freezes, lock-up, hangs, or stop responding. (I'll use these terms interchangeably throughout this article.) The reasons vary and no single event, process, or device can be the cause and cure to every lockup or freeze. I have searched high and low; over the years for a simple, easy to diagnose solution to the lock-up problem. However, in some cases I am able to isolate and correct the culprit. More often than not, the culprit is a buggy device driver.

The reason(s) you may experience computer freezes, could be software related or hardware related; perhaps it's a combination of both. Below is a broad list of some of  common causes of computer freezes.

  • Memory:
  • Video
  • Device Drivers
  • Bad Motherboard
  • Bad Devices
  • System Resources
  • Software
  • The Kitchen Sink

OK, the kitchen sink is pushing it.. but you get the picture. Now that we know what may cause your computer to freeze or lockup the real question is how to isolate the cause and solve it.

Since there are numerous sites that addresses this issue I have composed a list that should be helpful.
